One runtime error that has plagued users of Windows XP for many years is the DLL runtime error. These have actually been around since the very first Windows operating system. As with all runtime errors, the occurrence of the DLL runtime error is a nuisance and interferes with productivity. Solving it, however, is usually a matter of doing some troubleshooting and finding the root cause of the problem.

What Does DLL Mean?

DLL stands for Dynamic Link Library and is a file type that makes up many integral parts of almost all Windows applications. DLL errors usually cause programs to behave erratically or to fail to even load properly.

If you receive a DLL Runtime Error message, you should write down the exact wording of the error message as it will reference the source of the problem for you. You can search online for information pertaining to the specific error that caused the message. The odds are excellent that someone else has encountered this problem before. If not, they certainly will later, so talking about it on forums is a good source of information.

Different DLL Runtime Error and their Solutions

The easiest and most common solution to a DLL runtime error is to uninstall the software causing the problem and reinstall it. This will normally take care of it completely. There are, however, times when this does not work. In some cases, a new installation can overwrite DLL files used by another application. Badly written Windows installer programs have been responsible for this sort of error many times.

In some cases, there is a patch available, either from Microsoft Update, or from the software developer that is designed to eliminate the problem and prevent these overwrites.

Another common cause of DLL runtime errors is the presence of spyware on the computer. Spyware can extract information about your computing habits and send it to an outside source. In some cases, personal information is taken as well. At best, spyware will slow the performance of a system considerably. At worst, it can cause you to be flooded with popup advertisements all at once.

Unfortunately, spyware is overlooked by most antivirus programs. This is why it is essential to have a full security suite that can locate and remove spyware, along with any other type of malware, that is not wanted on the system.

Some spyware programs leave behind a trace when removed that will allow the software to reinstall itself when the server realizes that the system is not sending the data expected. A good registry cleanup utility can generally remove those odd traces from the system before this reinstallation can take place. Registry tools can also help to patch path errors leading to certain files, thus eliminating the possibility that the file is there, but the system can’t find it.

Fixing DLL runtime errors is usually simply a matter of removing malware and/or uninstalling and reinstalling the application that caused the error. There may be other problems present, but this is fairly rare. Good luck!
