Help Fix DLL Runtime Errors For The Windows operating system.

Posted by on 3:39 pm in Fix DLL Errors | 0 comments

One runtime error that has plagued users of Windows XP for many years is the DLL runtime error. These have actually been around since the very first Windows operating system. As with all runtime errors, the occurrence of the DLL runtime error is a nuisance and interferes with productivity. Solving it, however, is usually a matter of doing some troubleshooting and finding the root cause of the problem.

What Does DLL Mean?

DLL stands for Dynamic Link Library and is a file type that makes up many integral parts of almost all Windows applications. DLL errors usually cause programs to behave erratically or to fail to even load properly.

If you receive a DLL Runtime Error message, you should write down the exact wording of the error message as it will reference the source of the problem for you. You can search online for information pertaining to the specific error that caused the message. The odds are excellent that someone else has encountered this problem before. If not, they certainly will later, so talking about it on forums is a good source of information.

Different DLL Runtime Error and their Solutions

The easiest and most common solution to a DLL runtime error is to uninstall the software causing the problem and reinstall it. This will normally take care of it completely. There are, however, times when this does not work. In some cases, a new installation can overwrite DLL files used by another application. Badly written Windows installer programs have been responsible for this sort of error many times.

In some cases, there is a patch available, either from Microsoft Update, or from the software developer that is designed to eliminate the problem and prevent these overwrites.

Another common cause of DLL runtime errors is the presence of spyware on the computer. Spyware can extract information about your computing habits and send it to an outside source. In some cases, personal information is taken as well. At best, spyware will slow the performance of a system considerably. At worst, it can cause you to be flooded with popup advertisements all at once.

Unfortunately, spyware is overlooked by most antivirus programs. This is why it is essential to have a full security suite that can locate and remove spyware, along with any other type of malware, that is not wanted on the system.

Some spyware programs leave behind a trace when removed that will allow the software to reinstall itself when the server realizes that the system is not sending the data expected. A good registry cleanup utility can generally remove those odd traces from the system before this reinstallation can take place. Registry tools can also help to patch path errors leading to certain files, thus eliminating the possibility that the file is there, but the system can’t find it.

Fixing DLL runtime errors is usually simply a matter of removing malware and/or uninstalling and reinstalling the application that caused the error. There may be other problems present, but this is fairly rare. Good luck!

How To Remove a Virus From Your Computer System.

Posted by on 3:32 pm in Virus | 0 comments

If you own a computer there is a very real chance that at some point your machine will be infected with a virus and unchecked this virus can cause permanent harm to both your computer and its files but the virus could also steal passwords, bank account information and other personal information. Most computers have anti-virus software installed when it is still at the factory but it is up to you, the user, to ensure that your computer’s virus protection is up to date and adequate for your needs.

Even if you do have protection against viruses installed on your machine, if it is out of date or improperly configured your computer and all your information is still at risk! By keeping an updated anti-virus program installed and properly configured your risks at being infected by a virus are considerably lower than if you don’t, but what if your computer is already infected by a virus? As a consultant, I assure you that if you follow these steps and you will be able to bring your computer back to its virus-free status (most of the time :-).

The number one thing that you need to do once you realize you may have a virus on your computer is to disconnect from the internet. This can be done either by physically removing your networking cable or turning off your networking connection from within your computer’s operating system. This is important because most viruses are unknowingly distributed by affected computers while the computer owner is left in the dark not realizing that his computer may be infecting others.

Once your computer is disconnected from both local networks as well as the internet you need to get down to the task of removing the virus. Hopefully you computer has a sufficient anti-virus program already installed, if this is the case run a full scan using your anti-virus software, many programs require you to restart so the anti-virus software can run before any system software is loaded; this is to ensure that any and all viruses are removed completely.

You may have to run your anti-virus software several times to ensure your machine is completely free of all viruses and malicious software. Once your anti-virus software shows your computer is clean from viruses you should reconnect to the internet and see if there is an updated version of your virus protection software, if there is, download it and run your anti-virus software again, just to be safe.

If for some reason you do not have an adequate anti-virus program already installed on your machine you will need to get one. There are several options, you can buy one from a computer retailer or you can download a free anti-virus program on another unaffected computer. Once the new software is available you should install on your affected machine and follow the on-screen instructions as well as our instructions above.

By keeping a current up-to-date anti-virus program installed on your machine you ensure that your computer will operate in its optimal state and you can rest easy knowing that your passwords, bank accounts and personal data is safe from hackers, spy and identity thieves.

I made the switch, I’m now password organized! Are you?

Posted by on 1:02 pm in Tech Talk | 0 comments

So I did it, I’m officially “password organized”. I admit, I just made up that term but I’m finally on track with all of my passwords, completely organized and it feels great! This may sound like a rather trivial accomplishment but you would not believe how many of us are just all over the place with our passwords!passwords-kee

Like most people I started with my passwords on a piece of paper. Oh joy, that’s secure. There they were, written on a sheet of paper next to my desktop (at the time). Now granted this was a number of years back when we really only had a few online passwords. Back then it was easy to keep track. You typically had one username that you stuck with and a standard password or two that you used with maybe some slight variations that were sort of easy to keep in your head.

So I had just a handful of these written on my little tattered sheet of paper near my computer and it worked.  Then a few years passed. Facebook came along, then twitter, then google plus, then another email account, and a few more financial institutions, oh and don’t forget pinterest and tumblr and constant contact and passwords for my business and passwords for just personal accounts and passwords for things that I signed up for that I no longer really need but I haven’t gotten around to cancel. Well you get the idea.  I had to do something. The sheet of paper had turned into a lengthy list of cross outs and run on information so I opted to transfer everything to a password protected excel spreadsheet.

There I had a number of columns. Web address, login info, password and a column for notes. I had been using this system for a number of years. I’d make copies of the electronic file so just in case it became corrupted I had a backup. I named it something inconspicuous, not “password sheet” of course, something a little more creative. Password protected the document and kept that on my machine. I felt pretty good. I had them organized, the information was there and all in one place. It wasn’t perfect but it was better.

Then just recently I was having some computer issues and my brother Ross, being the tech savvy guy that he is (and just so happens to be the owner of RingAGeek) remoted into my machine to help me out. (He was able to do this from his office in Florida via the internet, he has a server with this technology that is pretty cool by the way).

I needed help with something that involved retrieving a password from my excel worksheet. I let him know that I would need to open the excel file. He then replied saying “Excel, what…you’re saving your passwords in excel!” I could have sworn I heard cartoon wheels screeching over the telephone. He asked why and proceeded to firmly let me know that excel isn’t all that secure even though the file was password protected.  What I was doing was not very safe and secure, not efficient and obviously not recommended.  It was then that Ross introduced me to KeePass.

He went on to explain that it’s a free, open source password manager that I could easily install, learn and start using. I could keep my passwords organized in this database and back up the data when I did my usual computer backups. So with his help we downloaded the file and he showed me how to enter one or two as an example. Within minutes I was adding my data and rolling along. Transferring my passwords into this database. There’s plenty of space for usernames, url’s, notes and there’s even an automatic password generator should you choose to use it.

I’ll admit. It took a few weeks for me to transfer all my data over. Get used to working in and retrieving my information from a database but I will tell you this. I’m not going back! Just a few moments before starting this article I deleted my excel file and the backups.  That’s it, no more lists for me! From now on its password database nirvana!

Do External Hard Drives Need Special Care?

Posted by on 12:39 pm in External Hard Drive | 0 comments

Because an external hard drive (EHD) is a separate device from your computer, and is not housed in the protective case of the computer, some attention should be given to make sure that the device is well-taken care of. Here are a few pointers to make sure your device is kept in top-condition.

1. Keep dust and debris away from your external hard drive. You can use a soft clean cloth to remove dust from the surface of the EHD. Also, keep other surrounding surfaces free of dust. Vacuum floors and furniture often, to prevent dust build-up in the surrounding environment.

2. Choose a safe place for your EHD. The best place for an EHD is
• Clean and dry
• Flat
• Stable
• Moderate climate

Coming in contact with other solid or liquid substances can damage and sometimes completely ruin electronic devices. This is just as true with an external hard drive as it is with any other gadget. So pick a place that is clean and dry, and is not likely to become wet or dirty. Hint: the kitchen table is probably not this place.

Keep the device flat, rather than tilted or on its side. Also make sure that it is in a place that it will not be accidentally knocked onto the floor or bumped. To keep it in top shape, the climate for an EHD should not be in the extremes of temperature or humidity. Keep it away from heater or air conditioner vents, and away from humidifiers.

3. Use a surge protector. If your EHD requires its own power source, use a surge protector to prevent damage from power surges.

4. Don’t move your EHD while it is turned on. Moving it around while it is in use can cause damage.

5. Keep it ventilated. You don’t necessarily need to keep a fan blowing on it, but make sure that it has plenty of open space around it for the air to flow freely around it to prevent it from overheating. Keeping it in an enclosed cabinet can cause it to overheat. Also, don’t let it get covered with cloth or plastic or anything else.

6. Keep out of reach of children. Kids and babies, as a general rule, love electronic gadgets. As fun as it is to see little ones exploring their new world, it is also good to teach them to develop self-control and learn not to touch or play with certain things. This is for their own safety as well as to protect gadgets from unnecessary harm. If necessary, keep your external hard drive in a place that is inaccessible to little fingers and mouths.

7. Use as directed. Although some EHD’s are designed to be portable, some are designed for stationary use. Don’t use a stationary external hard drive as a portable device. Also, use only the recommended cables or accessories stipulated by the manufacturer. For instance, as a rule, internal and external SATA and eSATA cables and connections are not interchangeable. Using them interchangeably can cause malfunction and damage.

Conclusion

For the most part, caring for an external hard drive involves just using common sense measures that you’ll want to use with any electronic devices. Taking good care of your EHD can give you longer term use from it, as well as a better usage experience. Take a look at EHD from Dell here.

How Important Is It To Update Java?

Posted by on 10:10 pm in Java | 0 comments

Java has certainly received its share of fanfare over the past few months. When we speak of Java, we are not talking about your morning cup of coffee. Java is a common protocol on almost every Windows computer and is an essential element for many websites and games. A security flaw in the software could allow a hacker to infect your system and under the right circumstances, gain control of a machine. The key phrase here is “under the right circumstances”. Like most security holes, and they are a dime a dozen, all the ingredients must come together to get all the bad effects.

Oracle, the company that produces Java, was at first slow in getting the required updates out there to fix the flaw but as of late, the updates have been rolling in and if you use the default security settings, you will have good protection from an unwanted bug. Although Java has been given a primary focus as of late, security flaws also exist in Adobe Reader, Flash and other software as well.

I believe that many times when we get infected it is due to our own actions when we go to risky or unknown sites, especially those related to shopping or games. Often times this will happen when we are looking for software to protect our very own machines! Many antivirus sites are actually fake but can look a lot like the real thing. Care must be taken when searching for antivirus software to be sure you are on an official site.

The new Java update includes a feature that allows us to run or not run an application. When you are on a known good site, if you put a tic next to the box that says “not to ask about this page again”, your computer will remember the option and not bug you every time you open that page. If you are on a free game site or an unknown shopping site, it is probably best to click the NO button to not allow Java to run.

By careful surfing and maintaining a good antivirus program, I have been able to remain virus free for the last 8 years. That is with using Java and all the other plug-ins including Flash on my systems. You can do the same as well! Just be sure to maintain an up to date antivirus tool, update all your plug-ins including Java and Flash and have a once a year clean up performed by an experienced tech to be sure all is go.

It is important to remember that most virus infections require some interaction on your part to get into your machine. If, while browsing, you get an unusual request for a download or to start a program, check to be sure it is something you are actually requesting before clicking yes to the application. Once you allow it, the virus will take its toll on your system and you will most likely need to consult with a professional to be sure it is properly removed.

In short, go ahead and have that cup of Java in the morning while you play your favorite games or view your favorite websites using the plug-in by the same name. Just be sure not to venture too far off the beaten path while doing so. Getting a hot cup of Java in a remote location is not always easy.

So tablets are all the rage, but will they ever truly replace the common notebook?

Posted by on 2:32 pm in Tablets | 2 comments

I say no way. Ok so I’m hitting you up front with my opinion. Count to ten and take a deep breath before you respond. Let’s think about this a little more.

While it’s true, it would be wonderful never to have to lug another heavy notebook through the airport. My favorite part is taking it out of its case, and putting it through the imaging detector, always wondering if my data will be there on the other side. Ironically, the very component that makes notebooks cumbersome is the one thing that we’re drawn to. A larger screen size.

Now it’s true, I would be truly lost without my tablet. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been able to show clients images that I’ve created, found the closest coffee shop when it’s freezing out on the streets of New York, or been able to share precious videos with family and friends. I’ve also given valuable data and feedback on tablet kiosks.

Just recently while leaving a medical appointment I had opportunity chance to share my experience on a tablet as I left the facility. From customer surveys, to valuable data collection in the field for scientists, as well as payment acceptance for the small business owner. Tablets have become an invaluable tool! However, is this enough for this device to pull ahead and replace the notebook? I’m still not sold.

In addition to physical limitations there are huge software issues. Not that the tablet doesn’t function well, very rarely does my tablet “crash”. It’s just that the software I need is just not available. There are a handful of applications that are necessary for me to run my business and they’re just not made for the tablet. I’ve heard this from a number of other individuals as well.

This seems to be the one point that keeps some people from purchasing a tablet altogether. The software is just not there yet. Sure, there are zillions apps for this and that, but are they the ones that we use day in and day out to fit our business needs?  Unfortunately the answer is a resounding no.

There are some physical limitations as well. When you are typing on a notebook your fingers tap a keyboard with keys that are fitted with small springs to absorb the impact. Not true on a glass screen. With each finger strike the pressure in which your finger taps the screen is reverted back into your hand. Now that may not sound like much, but add this impact up over the course of a few hours of note taking and well, you start to feel it. Maybe we just need little sneakers for our fingers. Could be another product launch but I digress.

The actual way the device needs to be held is another point. There are additional add ons such as holders and cases for the tablets that allow you to prop up the device. Otherwise you find yourself at odd angles while typing on the screen. Often supporting the device with one hand while typing with the other.  Finally, as I mentioned before the screen is smaller than that of even the smallest notebook. So there could be some eyestrain involved.  All of these factors combined can make working on a tablet uncomfortable.

All this being said I do find it difficult to leave the house without my tablet. My phone, even a smaller tablet is almost permanently adhered to my hand but that’s another article entirely. As far as my notebook goes, it’s my old faithful and I just could not see giving it up. So I guess I’ll be hanging onto it for at least a few more years.

The Progress of Windows 8

Posted by on 11:00 pm in Windows 8 | 2 comments

Windows 8 has proven to be a challenge for Microsoft to get people to think of it as the best operating system on the planet. Although the majority of new computers offer it as the main operating system, many consumers are doing whatever it takes to place Windows 7 on those brand new laptops.

Windows 8 has been referred to by some as the new Vista. Vista was the operating system that replaced XP and was short lived because of the large amount of bugs that it contained. Windows 7 was rushed to completion to offset Vista and it remains a very stable and great Operating System. With the stability and user friendliness of Windows 7, it is no wonder that everybody still craves it. Windows XP and Windows 7 remain the 2 best operating systems that Microsoft has ever created. XP still has a strong foothold on the operating system market as millions of people still use it, including myself.

The other day I was looking over some forums and customer reviews for some major brand computers and laptops. I saw a lot of great reviews for the machines but many, many posts simply stated that they hated Windows 8. In the coming months I would like to see more computer manufacturers offering “downgrade disks” so consumers can install Windows 7 if they so choose. Manufacturers are not going to be able to sell their products if they do not offer what the customer wants. The choice to use Windows 8 or 7 should be implemented as a norm. If I walk into a store and all I see is Windows 8, I turn around and leave.

Windows 8 was originally designed as an operating system to use with a touch screen phone or tablet. It was then thought that instead of creating two operating systems; why not combine it into one. That is why the famous “start menu” is missing from Windows 8. This is quite possibly one of the biggest complaints of the users. There are numerous add ons you can get to replicate it but they are nothing like what you find if you use Windows 7 or even XP for that matter. Besides the start menu, we have also heard of some very buggy behavior with the operating system. It is also more difficult to do simple tasks that were user friendly and straightforward in other versions of Windows.

A trend we have seen is that many folks are doing whatever they can to preserve the machine they currently own. Think about it, when people were replacing their machines at a rapid pace, Windows XP was the primary operating system. People loved it and it was a treat to get a shiny new machine with all the bells and whistles. Now, many are dreading having to use Windows 8 so they are holding off and keeping their existing machines. In addition, the introduction of Tablets has also put a hurt on new PC sales, even though these products can never be a replacement for a full-featured Windows computer.

In short, I think that computer manufacturers and software designers need to offer what people want and not what they want us to use. This will help to increase the sale of new computers and give the computer era a brand new jump-start!

Daylight Savings Time: You can lose more than an hour of sleep!

Posted by on 2:38 pm in Geek Stuff | 1 comment

So it’s March and you lost an hour of sleep. Big deal, we do this every year and we’ll get over it but, don’t just brush off your computer updates!

If the time is off on your computer (lower right corner of your Windows PC) this could mean more than making you late for your morning meeting (or in my caseclock-time this morning, my gym workout).  Make sure that your time zone is set correctly and your computer system internal clock has been updated. The best way to do this, check to be sure you’re keeping up with your Windows Updates.

Big deal, why does this matter?  Did you know that if you hire an outside remote computer support person they might not be able to help you if the date/time is incorrect? Most servers that allow support individuals to do the work they need to do to help you will be locked out. The server will get completely confused if the time is off. Sure, sounds like and easy fix now but when is it that you’re seeking help? Usually when you have a virus or your computer is running wacky. Not the time to be installing updates and making adjustments, if you can even get to the programs to do so! So run your updates today.

Banking software. Need to check your account balance before your big monthly bill is due? Be sure you’ve updated that clock. Most banking software encryptions rely on a correct date and time for the location of your computer. Rather than think something is wrong with your account check your time, this could be the culprit.

Don’t be a lame duck. You’re a red flag if your computer date and time is off. There are viruses that seek these users out. It’s so obvious, if your time is off you are more than likely behind on software and virus protection updates. Muahahahahaha…this makes viruses very happy indeed.

A Few Simple Tips for your Wireless Router Signal – RingaGeek

Posted by on 3:09 pm in Wireless | 1 comment

Simple Tips To Improve Your Wireless Router

Wireless routers have completely revolutionized the way people access the internet. By simply getting a wireless router and establishing a wireless internet connection, individuals are now able to access the internet through a variety of handheld devices in addition to a regular desktop computer. However, with the added convenience of a wireless network also comes the possibility for wireless interference. The simplest of items, such as a dryer or microwave, may create a disturbance if you don’t know how to properly handle your wireless router.
If your wireless signal is weaker than it used to be, or it has become completely disrupted, here are a few things to try that might help.

1 – Clear The Area For Your Router

Wireless routers generally function best when they are in open areas, where they can exist without interference. If your router is behind a metal cabinet or blocked by another heavy object, it might be time to find a new location for it. Reposition your router so that it is free of obvious clutter. Also, try to place your wireless router near the middle of the desired coverage area so that the signals can be equally distributed.

2 – Check Your Router Speed

You will likely notice a difference if your internet connection suddenly becomes much slower than normal. However, it might be a good idea to check the speed regardless. This can help you to determine if you are still in the speed range that was guaranteed to you by your provider, helping you to identify potential problems.
Connection speed is generally very easy to test. All you need is some simple testing software, such as a LAN Speed Test, to determine the speed (given in Mbps). To get the most accurate results, it may be a good idea to check the results of the test a few different times. It is not uncommon for wireless speed to go down during the day when there are more wireless users. If the connection seems too slow for your needs, but it is still within the speed range promised by your provider, it may be time to upgrade.

3 – Manually Adjust Broadcast Channel

If your wireless signal is definitely slower than normal, you may want to try adjusting the channel of your router. When many wireless routers are using the same broadcast channel, it might become bogged down. Many of the newer router models automatically select a broadcast channel, so you may not need to worry about this step if you have a new model.

4 – Update Router Hardware

If your router hardware is out of date, it might be causing network slowdowns. Purchasing a new antennae or wireless repeater might make a big difference in your wireless router signal.

5 – Make Sure Your Network Is Protected

If your wireless signal is not protected, there might be others using it without your knowledge or consent. Having additional users may slow down your connection speed. Routers come with a variety of different security levels. The three most common levels of security, in order of increasing security, are the following:
1 – WEP
2 – WPA
3 – WPA2
After you have gone through all of these steps, you will likely see an increase in your wireless router signal. If your signal still seems slow, it may be time to consider newer routers or to ask for help from a professional. Visit here to learn more about routers.
